Miami Toros Hockey Team talk

I was invited by a close friend who has a 10-year-old, Agnar, who plays for the Miami Toros hockey team, to give them a talk.  Mariangela is a quintessential hockey mom, who, along with her husband Magnus, move heaven and earth to enable Agnar to get all the ice time he can to become as good a hockey player as he can be.  Parents are so dedicated! It is something to observe...
So I gave the kids (and their parents) four things to think about:
1. skate, skate, skate...  when... Read full post

250 push-up challenge.... in the middle

So I posted here a few weeks ago that we are doing the 250 push-up challenge.  Remember, you start with five push-ups today, then add 5 to the growing total every day thereafter.  We just crested the century mark two days ago - 100 in one day.
In a few hours, I'll be boarding a flight from Miami to Singapore that departs on Wednesday at 17:00 (5 pm) and arrives on Friday at 08:00 (8 am).  In essence, save for a 1.5 hour aircraft change in Zurich, I'll be in the the air... Read full post

Working out and post-working out

I post a lot about the virtues of training regularly to ensure that we keep our bodies in good physical condition for better bodily functioning, better sleep and overall health.  But there is a flip side to that, which is how we treat our bodies after we train.  Make no mistake about it, I'm not 20 years-old anymore!  In fact I am three times that, and my training partner, Ombretta, is 17 years my junior, so when I keep a full-on pace in our workouts, I need to be sure to be as... Almost impossible to put out a fire in a peat bog... the smoke from this one just keeps a-comin'!!!

... and you know what they say: Where there is smoke, there is fire!  Blatter just can't seem to dodge this heat-seeking missle...  Maybe, just maybe this one time, his arrogance will get the better of him and the whole mess will collapse around him!

In Conclusion, FIFA Says, FIFA Has Again Done Nothing Wrong...

The New York Times does not appear to be a FIFA fan anymore than I am... Below follows the news that the Independent Ethics Review is now being mis-cast from what Michael Garia, the Chairman of the investigative committee delivered in his 500+ page report!  It makes my blood boil to see how scandalous Blatter and his fellow Executive Members can be...  Maybe this time... just this one time, these criminals might be exposed for who and what they are...

Man Sets New World Record For Deepest Scuba Dive After Plunging More Than 1,000 Feet

My friend Gianluca sent me this article knowing how much we enjoy diving... It took 12 minutes for the decent (astoundingly fast considering Ahmed Gabr had to continually equalize to stave off the incredible pressure) and 14 hours to resurface (to stave off the bends)!  Exciting stuff!
Scuba organizations say recreational divers shouldn't go below about 130 feet, but one Egyptian diver recently ventured a bit deeper -- going more than 1,000 feet below the ocean surface and setting a world... Read full post

Ham strings...

Some months ago back in the spring, I went for my usual run on the beach (3.5 miles/5kms).  When I  felt my right ham string tighten up when I finished, I wasn't overly concerned because I hadn't trained for a week or so before the run and it seemed to be nothing more than a tight muscle...  They say that the only thing one can do for a pulled ham string is rest it, but I didn't think that my pull was that serious, which means I didn't give it the rest that I should have. ... Why so few whistles in Over Time?

May 29, 2014 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Over time is exciting no matter which sport utilizes this ultimate decision-maker!  "Sudden Death"...  What a great term! Last night's Los Angeles Kings v. Chicago Blackhawks game went two over time periods and in both the pace was so amped up that there were 7 and 8 minute stretches of end-to-end play BECAUSE the players were SO FOCUSED.  The quality of passing, speed and puck movement seems to rise - and stay - at levels not found during regular time and those officiating the... Sports Betting? Yup, just a front for money-laundering!

May 15, 2014 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Just read the following in on Sport Business: Illegal sports betting is responsible for laundering $140 billion of dirty money and accounts for 80 per cent of all betting on sport, according to a report produced by University Paris 1 Pantheon Sorbonne and the Qatar-based International Centre for Sports Security.  I'm not the least surprised.  But, this has got to hurt those Premier League teams who wear online betting firm logos on their shirts (for huge sponsorship fees). ... Road rage or fear? In either case, all they had to do was keep cool and keep driving...

October 3, 2013 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

The so-called New York road rage incident that has ended with one person potentially paralyzed and another fearing reprisals against him and his family is a tragedy that should never have happened!  The video has gone viral with over one million views since the tragic event took place 3 days ago and is detailed here for context:http://www.heavy.com/news/2013/09/watch-range-rover-runs-over-bikers-video/.
A few observations:
1. If the Range Rover driver had just stayed cool and allowed... Read full post
