IOC banning personal hotspots

July 25, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Interesting Tech Crunch report on London Olympics and the IOC re its "draconian" ways...http://techcrunch.com/2012/07/25/no-wi-fi-please-were-british-olympics-will-ban-personal-hotspots/ . The IOC is on track for another $4-5 billion for the next Olympic cycle, so one doesn't have to look very far to see how protective they are of every square inch of the Games...

An artifact or a Payday

July 23, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Interesting article in the Sunday Times sport section on monetizing memorabilia that museums have been holding for athletes.  I am a strong believer in seeing former pro athletes posting their boxes and boxes of personal memorabilia (that are currently gathering dust in basements or garages around the world) here in their own pages of lifedotsport.  There are just so many things that players keep and that fans would love to see and talk about... If only the players would photograph... Read full post

Whinging... A British sport?

July 21, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Whinging is not my new sport of the day, rather it has been defined as: persistent low-grade grousing that is the default mechanism to life’s challenges for Briton’s; part of the national condition. The word is familiar.  In fact, I have experienced it firsthand on those occasions when I have been in England, but I find it surprising that even dour Brits would not – at least try – to celebrate their hosting of the Olympic Games…  But five weeks... Canal-Vaulting...

July 19, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Great article in the main section of the NY Times today about how years ago the Dutch farmers crossed canals dividing their fields by vaulting over them with a pole, since bridges were few and far between.  Recently, in Linschoten, Holland, Jaco de Groot won the competition by vaulting 67 feet!  As the article points out, it is more about distance than height, so the vaulters plant their pole in the muddy bed of the canal near the bank and take a running start before leaping on to the... Trekking the Dolomites

July 5, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Ombra just added a new photo album about our week-long trek through the Dolomite mountains in Italy, in late May 2004.  The photos are really awesome and show just how inhospitable these extraordinary mountains are - really rugged countryside!

Mark the day! June 25th, 2012, our lifedotsport social media platform opened in BETA mode to allow all sport men and women to populate your own pages with your sport story and information and images about your sporting life!  It feels like we have been waiting to hatch this egg for a very long time; indeed, it has been a few years, but now with no restrictions to access the site we have moved into a new dimension!
I want to take a moment here to thank all of the team who have worked so... Read full post

Kings vs.....

May 23, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

LA locked in their spot for Stanley Cup round last night and will get a week's rest while the Rangers and Devils continue their East Coast battles tonight, tied at 2 games a piece... So, as I've said here a number of times, whoever gets the honor from this side of the draw is going to be pretty dam tired when the finals begin.
Here are three scenarios that could play out:
1. Rangers prevail over the Devils and Kings because of King Henrik and he is chosen MVP.  Everyone is over the... Read full post

Best perspective of what it's like to be a player on the ice...

May 18, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

While watching the first two Rangers - Devils playoff games (that were played in the Garden), I noticed that the goal replay camera positioned at the end of the rink, i.e. behind the goaltender, gives the viewers an experience of what it is like to actually be a player on the ice.  Fans rarely get the experience, but from this particular TV camera it is as close as you get to the real thing... so keep an eye out for that replay angle!

6 period hockey games...

May 9, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (1)

I've been talking with friends about the phenomenon of 'parity' within the NHL teams these days, as we witness game after game of the playoffs going into multiple overtime periods before the game ends.  The recent Ranger's/Capital's game was the perfect example: 3 regular periods of high-paced, ruggedly physical hockey followed 3 periods of 'can't make one mistake - go for it all' hockey!  Are you kidding me?!  This is all on top of having played more than 100 games already this...
