Great story, Tom, but I don't get the black gunk part... was this soot or oil? And were you running so close to the wall that you managed to rub your arms against it on the way in and out? You've really piqued my interest with this one!

Ron,

You got it.  the "sidewalk" was so narrow that I had to hug the wall going in and out.  this sludge must be from the build-up of car exhaust built up over the years.

My goodness!  That was quite an experience indeed...  Thank God you had the presence of mind to turn around; otherwise who knows what might have befallen you had you gone further!  Lesson learned.
