Photos from Ironman 70.3 South Africa.
This race took place in East London, South Africa, 22 January 2012.
Ironman 70.3 South Africa. After only 5 years’ existence, it has become the world’s largest 70.3 race with more than 3,100 competitors! I have never before seen so many bikes in one place. I now know that cycling to work in London during the winter DOES work, since my 2.38 bike split (93K/58 miles, and 1,100m/3,300 feet of climbing) was the 5th fastest on the day, out of 220 competitors in my 45-49 age group. #58 out of the thousands, and only 15-20 mins slower than the fastest pros… Overall, with a finish time of 5.31 I came in as #19 in my age group – despite having forgotten my wetsuit so I had to drive back to my B&B and get it (and only just made the start), swimming to a wrong buoy so I had to swim back and lost 10 mins, and some bike issues plus a slow run on the hilly course. Nevertheless, a great start on the season and I am very pleased. A great day out, and I was proud to again show off the Active colors!
