So this is what the world looks like at 60...

So today is my 60th birthday.  For some it is a BIG birthday, but for me 50 was that...  In my view, 50 is the 'half way there' mark, so 60 is just 10 years further on.  As my friends will all attest, I am 100% sure that I, along with many in my generation and absolutely all of those in coming generations, will live to be 100 years old and more.  I take this understanding from the pace at which technology, science and medicine is racing forward...  As incredible as it seems, the commercial Internet and all of the digital gadgetry and apps that are so deeply integrated into our lives did not exist when I was 45 - just 15 years ago.  So what does that tell you about the coming - in my case - 40 years?

So when I asked for Ombretta's hand in marriage on my 50th birthday, I promised here 50 years of life and love...

The key question then comes: How do you want to look and feel at 100 years old?  This is a question many would rather not hear, let alone think about... But, I take it to heart.  And for this reason I exercise my body and mind, if not daily then every other day.  We don't have a tough regimen - tough as in preparing for an ironman competition; rather a reasonable one.  We run for a few miles, swim, do some push ups and sit ups, rollerblade, study karate...  We do SOMETHING.  When it comes to our diet, we eat healthy.  Staying away from meat in favor of vegetables.  Pasta, of course, but not more than 1-2 times per week.  Lots of fruit for breakfast; Greek yoghurt with honey.  Salads for lunch...

At the end of the day the Good Lord put us on this planet and gave us a lifetime for a reason.  So I just think that we should do our part by keeping the vehicle which houses our hearts, minds and spirits in as good a condition as we can... For my part, having followed this way of thinking has blessed me with a strong healthy body that enbables me to fully pursue the life I love with the woman I love.

Can't ask for more than that, particularly at 60... ;o)

Many, many wishes for your 60th birthday and welcome between us over 60!

And many, many thanks for the clear and deep reflections you gave us, dear friend.

Congrats Ron! You sure don't look nor act 60. Gives me some comfort that turning 50 in a couple of years isn't going to be as bad as I have feared it might be!

Ron,

Love your post and I can't not agree more.  Happy Birthday my good friend! One thing I enjoy about getting older is the wisdom and experience but aging healthy, active and loving what you do makes it even better.

You are a true example that is it possible to stay young and think young with a positive attitude towards life.  Age is just a number!

A big hug

Fear not, Lars... ;o)  A man with your level of fitness, commitment and determination will be winning Masters Ironman competitions when you're in your 70's and 80's - with 20-30 years still ahead of you!  You, my friend, are in for a wild ride!
