Kim's Thank You Games 12/12/12 in the Sportpaleis of Belgium (Antwerp)

7 grandslams, 4 olympic medals and twice she won the Diamond Games in Antwerp. This might have been the reason why Venus Williams was chosen to play Kim's very last match against her. If Venus had won, she would have taken home the racket full of diamonds, that up to now only the French Amélie Mauresmo possesses, since you have to win the Diamond Games three times to own one of the most beautiful rackets in the world. It was the 14th time Kim and Venus played each other. Kim invited the Paralympics 2012 silver and gold medal Marieke Vervoort for the toss. Her golden dog Zenn played with the coin. After a ball from Venus that 9 out of 10 of today's top tennis girls would not have gotten, the Sportpaleis did the Mexican Wave in the match, a wave that was hard to stop. Kim won 6-3, 6-3 from Venus. Venus took revenge (8-5) in the double she played with Kirsten Flipkens against Kim and Amélie Mauresmo, who put loads of balls in the net... Four former number ones playing each other, though Flipkens was only number one with the juniors. In the first match, most everybody wanted Kim to win, but in the double it did not matter any more. There was a delicious atmosphere and even the four athletes were having loads of fun. Whereas in Kim's temporary Adieu in 2007 we had seen her very sad, after her come-back and having had her daughter Jada, this time she was absolutely at peace with saying goodbye to her professional tennis career and enjoying every bit of it, even dancing during the match, something Venus, as always, was very good at too.

In the Café Clijsters (a special name honouring Kim for the TV-program normally called Café Corsari, the Sportpaleis holding 13.000 of Kim's biggest fans - yours truly being one of them - became the biggest Café in the world! I honestly do not see any other Belgian athlete who would be able to get the Antwerp Sportpaleis sold out, which Clijsters did many times before. Shows you how much we love her. Venus said for her honesty, her fair play, her overall attitude,... I honestly could not tell you really why I like her so much, the same reasons probably. Maybe my oldest niece being just as blond and blue eyed and also called Kim and being 29 years old just like Kim Clijsters did something unconsciously too... I remember I was the first one in the hospital (apart from her husband) when my sister's first baby got born. I even got a ticket for bad parking, because I was so excited about my little sister and her big belly getting a little baby and could not find a parking space. My sister gave me the idea to send a copy of Kim's birth certificate in order not to have to pay the fine, and it worked! Not any more now, 29 years later the police here do not buy stories anymore.

Back to Café Clijsters yesterday night! A lot of well-know Flemish artists and sports people made a song for Kim. But the most unexpected song was the one sung by her husband, the former American basketball player Bryan Lynch. He did very well indeed and got a big kiss on the mouth from Kim in front of us all after having sung his ode to her. She said she was happy to find out this was what he had been doing when she was starting to wonder a few days ago what he was so busy with. It was a beautiful scene. We also saw a video of their daughter Jada having fun at some tennis lessons, being as playful as her mother. Elke (Kim's sister) and her husband Jelle Van Damme (also a professional football player) were part of the party of course, and so were their grandparents and Bryan's parents and Kim's mother. Former professional football player, Lei Clijsters, who played in the Belgian natioanal team, died a couple of years ago, and Kim says her father is with her in mind always.

Vincent Kompany saw very much merit in what Kim does for SOS Kinderdorpen. I put big eyes when I heard she actually bought a 400.000 euro house for the children, but I am not sure if she did that all by herself or what was the intervention of one of her long time sponsors, Adecco (a company for interm employment). Unfortunately I have to go... but we had an absolutely great night! It was almost midnight when we left in a very great atmosphere.

Great night for Kim Clijsters and a great night for all in attendance, by the sound of it!  Thanks for sharing this sweet story of a legendary athlete stepping back from competition, Beatrice.  Indeed, when a professional takes that final step off the court, field, or whatever, that is a bittersweet one; but it sounds to me like Kim left pro tennis on her terms with all her fans in attendance.  Can't be a better way to go out!

You've often spoken about how much you admire her... so I'm glad that you had this wonderful opportunity to share with Kim!

Wow, LifedotSport earns its stripes !!  I am also a lover of Kim and her fine accomplishments and sportswomanship.  I missed this event completely, and reading it here was almost like attending, actuallly in some ways better with some special information conveyed.  Thank you, Beatrice !!

I agree to Thomas Flohr on "..reading it here was almost like attending, actuallly in some ways better with some special information conveyed." and Ron Andruff "..Kim left pro tennis on her terms with all her fans in attendance.  Can't be a better way to go out!".

Kim was indeed an exceptional athlete! Thank you Beatrice!

I am glad two people read this. I corrected some typo's. Could have put much more there, but then not too many people are interested and the ones who are know what an exceptional athlete Kim was. Navratilova said something like no-one had Kim's attitude, always positive, always with class. Andy Roddick something like Kim is one of the nicest tennis players ever. Try and find someone who had problems with her. She is a fantastic human being. Serena amongst many other good things also says Kim is one of the best human beings. Federer... An American WTA female director  I forgot the name of brought a book for Kim that all these great players put pictures and notes in for Kim. Venus said on 12/12/12 what she appreciated most of Kim was her fair play, that even if she lost a match, she still seemed happy for you, while loosing isn't fun. Many girls do say then : "Well done", but they do not mean it. "Kim was honest, which is not very common. Her truthfullness is so beautiful."
