The league came of age on the field, but was well short of its crease as a TV spectacle

Indian Players Qualified for London Olympics 2012
May 14, 2012 By admin Leave a Comment
It is always said India is a nation where only cricket is played. But we will say India is a nation where cricket is also played along with many others game. Indian athletes are practicing very hard so that they can make India proud at International level. Lets talk about the 2008 Beijing Olympics where only 56 Indian players were qualified. Now for London Olympics 2012 almost 80 days are remaining and... Read full post

Kings vs.....

May 23, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

LA locked in their spot for Stanley Cup round last night and will get a week's rest while the Rangers and Devils continue their East Coast battles tonight, tied at 2 games a piece... So, as I've said here a number of times, whoever gets the honor from this side of the draw is going to be pretty dam tired when the finals begin.
Here are three scenarios that could play out:
1. Rangers prevail over the Devils and Kings because of King Henrik and he is chosen MVP.  Everyone is over the... Read full post

Best perspective of what it's like to be a player on the ice...

May 18, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

While watching the first two Rangers - Devils playoff games (that were played in the Garden), I noticed that the goal replay camera positioned at the end of the rink, i.e. behind the goaltender, gives the viewers an experience of what it is like to actually be a player on the ice.  Fans rarely get the experience, but from this particular TV camera it is as close as you get to the real thing... so keep an eye out for that replay angle!

6 period hockey games...

May 9, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (1)

I've been talking with friends about the phenomenon of 'parity' within the NHL teams these days, as we witness game after game of the playoffs going into multiple overtime periods before the game ends.  The recent Ranger's/Capital's game was the perfect example: 3 regular periods of high-paced, ruggedly physical hockey followed 3 periods of 'can't make one mistake - go for it all' hockey!  Are you kidding me?!  This is all on top of having played more than 100 games already this... First time taken to a hockey game by a girl...

Well it's been almost 40 years since I turned pro and I've seen quite a number of games over the years, but last night was the first time in my life that I've ever been invited to go to a game with a girl...  Sweet!  It came about in a round about way, but it was really pleasant watching the game with Lori Turoff.  She and my Koguma Dojo Daisempai have season tickets to the NJ Devils and last night she originally had a conflict, so Daisempai invited me to go along.  As luck... "My new favorite sport: NHL Playoff Hockey"

So my friend, Neil Goldman, of Boston, told me last season that his favorite sport is NHL Playoff Hockey... And while it sounds amusing at first blush, it is true that playoffs is 'a sport' in its own right!  Every shift on the ice counts in your success or going home.  My neighbor reminded me yesterday that it will take 16 playoff wins for the 2011/12 Stanley Cup Champions to be crowned.  That is more games than the entire NFL season!  And they come after some 10 pre-season... So Ombra and I heard that there is a Tai Chi class taking place at our club and decided to try it out today.  The logic being, if we can perfect the slow motion Tai Chi movements and techniques then our karate movements and techniques will become that much stronger.  Well, having taken the 45 minute class, I can definitely say that we are on target with our thinking.  All of the movements take a lot of focus and balance, which is exactly what we need on the other end of the... It is the subtleties of hockey that make the game

March 26, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

My Karate Daisempai is a REAL New Jersey Devils fan and he recently sent me a question that many fans probably do not know the answer to, even though it happens quite often during a hockey game.
He noted: “There was a faceoff in the Devils end.  Before the linesman dropped the puck, the players anticipated the drop and started to move their sticks.  The ref then made the Devils change the player for the faceoff.  My wife, Lori, asked why they had to change, and why... Read full post

So this past Saturday (March 17th, 2012) was the BIG day at Koguma Dojo -- Promotion Class!  It was an exciting day for all of us in the school and our full day ended with a party for our Dojo brothers and sisters at our home to celebrate...  Within all of the things our Daisempai had planned for us (pictures to follow) was breaking boards!  I was the first to jump up for that one, Ombretta soon followed... Check out the video:... Read full post
