bib fraud at Boston Marathon

April 24, 2014 by Tom Barrett   Comments (1)

I enjoyed this week's Boston Marathon as a participant from Heartbreak Hill.  It was great seeing an american win for the first time in over 30 years.
The word at this year's Boston Marathon was that security was super tight and would extend to "bandits" running without a bib.

But some folks decided they wanted to run so bad, that they... Read full post

Kim's 1st Invitational with Ana Ivanovitch, Kirsten Flipkens, Xavier Malisse and Henri Leconte

December 24, 2013 by Beatrice De Vis   Comments (0)

One year ago, on 12/12/12 Kim said goodbye to professional tennis in Het Sportpaleis in Antwerpen (Belgium). Now, three months after she gave birth to Jada's little brother Jack (September 18th), she found another fun date, 11/12/13, to organise her first 'Kim Clijsters Invitational' in the same Sportpaleis in Antwerpen. No idea if this is going to be a one time Invitational or if she's going to have these tennis meetings regularly (it'll be harder to find these fun dates though).

Nick Mevoli - in memoriam

November 18, 2013 by Ombra   Comments (2)

I am sure that any extreme sport athlete would find it a blessing to leave this world doing what they love to do, but for those left behind the question is: was it truly worth it?
Williamsburg-based deep-water diver Nick Mevoli passed at only 34 while attempting to break the US record at one of the top free diving competitions, Vertical Blue, held in the Bahamas.  He was hoping to reach 72 mt on a single inhalation, with no fins or supplemental oxygen...yeah, pretty insane. ... Taking a Jog at the Los Angeles Airport – Runners Beware

August 28, 2013 by Tom Barrett   Comments (0)

If you’re staying at the Los Angeles Airport and planning to go for a run, beware!
I was staying at a hotel at the Los Angeles Airport.  I decided to go for a run in the morning and asked for suggestions from the front desk.  They suggested a run to the Pacific Ocean, which was just 3.5 miles away.  The front desk helpfully traced the route using a yellow highlighter on a street map, which I placed into my pocket.
Let me stop here and give you a quick overview of the Los... Read full post

Loosing a job. How bad can it be?

July 25, 2013 by Daniel Montenegro   Comments (1)

It was a week ago that I was unexpectedly laid off from my job, after 7 and half years. It was truly shocking to hear from my I was no longer needed as a full time Designer, because the company was heading in a different direction. I remember feeling confused and taking by surprise, not know how to deal with it, what to do next, where to go to clear my mind.I cleared my desk and as I was packing my bag, I saw in it my swim trunks, googles and cap. I left the office extremely upset at the... Read full post

By TOM HOLLAND

The American series "30 Rock" has been airing in the U.K. for several years now, and most of it carries perfectly well across the pond. But comedy depends on context, and I was surely not alone among my countrymen in raising an eyebrow at one plot twist. Jack Donaghy, the fictional head of NBC (played by Alec Baldwin), decided to run the network into the ground and, to that end, scheduled a series of shows guaranteed to shed viewers. His great triumph was a concept so... Read full post

Nemo 33, the deepest man made swimming pool in the world!

February 4, 2013 by Beatrice De Vis   Comments (2)

Did you ever hear of Nemo 33, the deapest man made swimming pool in the world, a place in Brussels (Ukkel/Uccle)? Being of a curious nature, I went to have a look. You can only swim one hour at lunch time and one hour in the evening. Apart from that the place is for real divers, not for tourists like me. It's very easy to get to from my place : the ring and then exit Ruisbroek to the left and at the first roundabout left : the 33 meters deep swimming pool.

Trappist Westvleteren 12 crowned best beer in the world, again!

January 30, 2013 by Beatrice De Vis   Comments (3)

The American website RateBeer (just like last year) crowned the Belgian Trappist Westvleteren 12 the best beer in the world. There are ten Belgian beers in the Top 50 (eleven last year). Rochefort 10 is number seven. Westvleteren 8 is number seventeen. Belgian restaurants and cafés also get good rates. One restaurant I like very much, called 'De Heeren van Liedekercke' in Denderleeuw, Oost-Vlaanderen, has been rated the best beer restaurant in the world! That's where I had my first... Dangerous exercise: The hype of dehydration & heat-stroke

January 16, 2013 by Tom Barrett   Comments (1)

A fascinating article on deaths caused from sports.  Claims that causes of death due to heat stroke and dehydration are largely untrue.
This raises interesting questions about how much hydration during an extreme event is necessary.
