Canal-Vaulting...

July 19, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Great article in the main section of the NY Times today about how years ago the Dutch farmers crossed canals dividing their fields by vaulting over them with a pole, since bridges were few and far between.  Recently, in Linschoten, Holland, Jaco de Groot won the competition by vaulting 67 feet!  As the article points out, it is more about distance than height, so the vaulters plant their pole in the muddy bed of the canal near the bank and take a running start before leaping on to the... Race report: Ironman Frankfurt / Ironman European Championship 2012 - 8 July - 10.44 finish time

Ironman Frankfurt / Ironman European Championship 2012 - 8 July 2012
After a spell of hot days, the water temperature was getting very close to 24.5C (the upper limit allowed for wetsuit swims), and it looked like it might end up being a non-wetsuit swim. Luckily, it cooled down a little before the race, and it started raining, so the temperature stayed below the limit. Many of us could now relax, especially less talented swimmers such as myself. With almost 3,000 swimmers in a fairly small... Read full post

Trekking the Dolomites

July 5, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Ombra just added a new photo album about our week-long trek through the Dolomite mountains in Italy, in late May 2004.  The photos are really awesome and show just how inhospitable these extraordinary mountains are - really rugged countryside!

Renault Scenic & Avis experience in Frankfurt

July 4, 2012 by Lars Nordhild Rønning   Comments (1)

** 18:18 after having waited on Avis coming back with a solution for a couple of hours:OK I know this sounds crazy, but I managed to get myself and my colleague/fellow IM Frankfurt competitor locked out of our rental car in Germany (a French Renault Scenic), with the car key in the car, and absolutely all of our belongings in the car as well. Money, phones, bikes, luggage. One of those nice keyless entry systems which are great when they work, but getting back into the car is virtually... Read full post

Mark the day! Kings vs.....

May 23, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

LA locked in their spot for Stanley Cup round last night and will get a week's rest while the Rangers and Devils continue their East Coast battles tonight, tied at 2 games a piece... So, as I've said here a number of times, whoever gets the honor from this side of the draw is going to be pretty dam tired when the finals begin.
Here are three scenarios that could play out:
1. Rangers prevail over the Devils and Kings because of King Henrik and he is chosen MVP.  Everyone is over the... Read full post

Best perspective of what it's like to be a player on the ice...

May 18, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

While watching the first two Rangers - Devils playoff games (that were played in the Garden), I noticed that the goal replay camera positioned at the end of the rink, i.e. behind the goaltender, gives the viewers an experience of what it is like to actually be a player on the ice.  Fans rarely get the experience, but from this particular TV camera it is as close as you get to the real thing... so keep an eye out for that replay angle!
