Putting microphones on athletes during the games?

New York Times headline: "Hold the Profanity: Telecast will Capture a Game's Sounds"
I have one comment: BAD IDEA!
The article explains that the first, second and third baseman, the shortstop, the catcher and the center fielder will be wired with microphones, as will be the coaches -- when they step on to the field... Of course, there will be a time delay to bleep out the profanity that is sure to be included in the "game's sounds". But this idea is sheer stupidity for a number of reasons... Read full post

Blocking shots... ouch!

March 2, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

Yesterday's New York Times article on Blocking Shots in NHL was interesting. I was particularly amazed to see the growth in the trend! In the 1997/98 season, the Rangers led the league with 871 blocked shots. This year, the Islanders are on a pace to block 1,430! That's something else... In my era, the equipment was certainly not of a standard as today's; we didn't wear helmets, let alone ones with plastic visors; neither did we use teeth guards... Ass-end into the End Zone?

Ass-end into the End Zone?
There has been a lot of talk these days about the Patriot coaching choice to try to give Tom Brady another chance to score a touchdown to steal the game from the Giants, following Bradshaw’s bum-first TD… It seems that players on the Patriots had a hard time swallowing the concept of letting Bradshaw run – unchallenged – into their end zone in the Super Bowl. I can relate! It is extremely hard for long-trained athletes to override his/her... Read full post

Hockey fraternity

This afternoon as I was entering some data into my lifedotsport page, I got a call from Jim Wilkinson, someone that I had played hockey against when we were 16 years old! He told me that he was recently asked if he knew anyone from the Montreal Canadiens and he immediately thought of me. A few clicks of the mouse and search on the Internet yielded him my office number and soon we were laughing about our hockey past - over 40 years ago! The Splatsin First Nations Tribe that he works with is... Read full post

Concussions in sport...

March 2, 2012 by Ron Andruff   Comments (0)

sports

There has been a lot of discussion around hockey players and concussions over this last season. Currently, arguably the best player in the NHL, Sidney Crosby, is out with one and several players died this past summer as a result of repeated concussions... The NFL and college football is perhaps worse than hockey. Here is an article a friend just sent me noting that Tony Dorset is joining 300 other NFL players in a class action suit against the... ,

In this blog i will write about my training towards the oldest, longest and biggest cross-country ski race in the world.
I have never tried x-country skiing before but i am sure i will get to the finish of Vasaloppet in  weeks time. My backgound as a runner with more than 25 marathons and 3 IM in by belt will get me there.
As we rarely have snow in Denmark the majority of my training for the next 6 weeks will be on roller skis and it is my hope that this training will translate into... Read full post
